SURFICIAL GEOLOGIC MAPS OF CENTRAL AND SOUTHERN NEW
JERSEY AVAILABLE
Surficial geologic maps of central and southern New Jersey are now available
at the DEP Maps and Publications Sales Office in Trenton. The maps include
cross sections that show geologic formations in the subsurface and accompanying
text.
"Knowledge of our state's geology is vital because this information serves
as the basis for other environmental maps, including characterization
of watersheds, aquifers, soil stability and ecological habitat. The maps
are also essential for the evaluation of water supplies, sand and gravel
resources, and the clean up of contaminated ground water." DEP Commissioner
Bob Shinn said.
The maps benefit many groups including: county planners, environmental
commissions, consultants, site evaluation contractors, as well as students
and educators.
State Geologist Karl Muessig said, "Geologists from the New Jersey Geological
Survey (NJGS) and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) formed a cooperative
agreement to map New Jersey's geology in detail. The only remaining map
for northern New Jersey is in the final stages of editing prior to production.
Work on a digital coverage of the surficial geology is also in progress."
Shinn noted that former Governor Whitman and the National Governors Association
previously issued a policy statement supporting federal legislation to
build the nation's geologic map database through partnerships between
state geological surveys and the federal government. New Jersey continues
to benefit from this partnership.
