Abstract:
Surficial geologic materials are unconsolidated sediments that overlie bedrock and Coastal Plain formations, and that are the parent material for agronomic soils. In New Jersey, they include glacial, river, marine, windblown, wetland, and hillslope deposits and weathered-rock material. These materials are distinguished and mapped based on their grain size, mineral composition, bedding, physical properties, and landscape position. They are as much as 400 feet thick but are less than 30 feet thick over most of the state. Glacial deposits and weathered-rock material occur in the northern half of the state, marine deposits occur in the coastal areas of southern and central New Jersey, the other deposits occur statewide. These deposits are mapped at 1:24,000 scale using U. S. Geological Survey 7.5-minute topographic quadrangles as base maps.
This GIS data sets depict the surface extent of the surficial materials in the quadrangles. Note that additional surficial materials may occur beneath the surface deposit, particularly in glaciated areas of northern New Jersey and coastal areas of southern New Jersey. The data are from various Geologic Map Series and Open-File Maps at 1:24,000 scale. Additional data may be available by contacting the New Jersey Geological Survey. This may include: well and boring logs, bedrock-surface contours, geophysical data, cross sections, discussion of geologic history and hydrologic and engineering properties of the surficial materials, age and correlation of the surficial materials, lithologic data, glacial and landform features, and detailed unit descriptions.

II. Terms of Agreement
1. Digital data received from the NJDEP are to be used solely for internal purposes in the conduct of daily affairs.
2. The data are provided, as is, without warranty of any kind and the user is responsible for understanding the accuracy limitations of all digital data layers provided herein, as documented in the accompanying Data Dictionary and Readme files. Any reproduction or manipulation of the above data must ensure that the coordinate reference system remains intact.
3. Digital data received from the NJDEP may not be reproduced or redistributed for use by anyone without first obtaining written permission from the NJDEP. This clause is not intended to restrict distribution of printed mapped information produced from the digital data.
4. Any maps, publications, reports, or other documents produced as a result of this project that utilize NJDEP digital data will credit the NJDEP's Geographic Information System (GIS) as the source of the data with the following credit/disclaimer:
"This (map/publication/report) was developed using New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection Geographic Information System digital data, but this secondary product has not been verified by NJDEP and is not state-authorized."
5. Users shall require any independent contractor, hired to undertake work that will utilize digital data obtained from the NJDEP, to agree not to use, reproduce, or redistribute NJDEP GIS data for any purpose other than the specified contractual work. All copies of NJDEP GIS data utilized by an independent contractor will be required to be returned to the original user at the close of such contractual work.
Users hereby agree to abide by the use and reproduction conditions specified above and agree to hold any independent contractor to the same terms. By using data provided herein, the user acknowledges that terms and conditions have been read and that the user is bound by these criteria.

Attribute accuracy is tested by manually comparing hard copy plots of the digital data with the source materials. When attributes can not be visually verified on plots they are interactively queried and verified on the screen.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
Polygons intersecting the quadrangle boundary are closed along the border. Segments making up the outer and inner boundaries of a polygon tie end-to-end to completely enclose the area. All data crossing the quadrangle boundary are clipped to the boundary and data within a specified tolerance of the boundary are snapped to the boundary. The software ArcGIS 9.x checks for topology consistency and ensures that there are no duplicate lines, overshoots or undershoots.

Contacts of alluvium (Qal) and wetland deposits (Qs, Qmm) are generally well-defined by landform features and are accurate to within 50 feet. Contacts of glacial-lake and glacial-stream deposits, and postglacial stream-terrace deposits, are also well-defined by landform features and are generally accurate to within 100 feet. Contacts of other surficial materials are not well defined by landforms and are generally accurate to within 300 feet, depending on location and density of field data. Four tics on each mylar were utilized to register the data for digitizing (editing). A root-mean-square (RMS) error of 0.002 was required (approximately 40 feet at 1:24,000 scale). Proof plots were made for each data set on paper and compared to the original data.

Process_Description:
Field measurements and observations from exposures, excavations, and 5-foot hand-auger holes are combined with analysis of 1:12,000 stereo airphotos and data from wells, test borings, and geophysical surveys to map the surficial materials. The map was drafted on a stable overlay film registered to the 7.5 minute stable-base quadrangle. A GTCO AccuTab digitizer with an accuracy of +- 0.005 in. (+-0.127 mm) was used to input the data. All features were digitized as NAD83 state plane coordinates utilizing the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection's quadrangle grid data set. Tics were digitized into the coverage utilizing the corners of the 7.5 minute graticule on the base map. Four tics on each mylar manuscript were used to register the data for digitizing and editing. A root-mean-square (RMS) error of 0.002 was required (approximately 41.67 feet at 1:24,000 scale). Proof plots were made for each data set on mylar and compared to the original data. Linework that deviated from the original position by more than 0.02 inch were re-digitized, re-plotted, and corrected until acceptable results were obtained. The polygons were then attributed. The data set was printed out and QA/QC by the author.
