This set of ARC/INFO grids and bit-mapped images is derived from 14 U.S. Geological Survey 1:100,000- scale, 30 x 60 minute, digital raster graphic (DRG) images covering the New Jersey region. The grids were produced to create a set of three seamless and tiled images covering the north, central and southern parts of New Jersey. The tiles coincide with the geographic extent of the three sheets for the 1:000,000 scale Geologic Map of New Jersey, and are intended for use as base maps within a Geographic Information System (GIS). The conversion of the rasterized topographic-map images to a bit-mapped, monochromatic mode results in the loss of some map information otherwise included on full-colored topographic maps, such as area shading for wooded areas. The output images use an uncompressed tagged-image-file format (TIFF) and preserve the 250 dots-per-inch resolution of the DRG source imagery. Each image was processed to clear features outside tile neat lines and the State boundary. Some map features were set to a background value prior to conversion to a monochromatic image mode to enhance image clarity. The images are geo-registered and rectified to the 1983 North American Datum in state plane coordinate feet. Each image was geo-registered using at least three links including the corners of each 30 x 60 minute sheet and 7-1/2' reference tics within New Jersey. The source DRG images covering New Jersey were copied from CD to a hard disk directory for subsequent processing. Each image was processed using a raster image editor into a monochromatic format by manually resetting 11 of the 13 color index values in the image's color map in the following manner:

At least three links were used for registering each image. Registration links corresponding to 7-1/2 minute quadrangle tics were used where available, supplemented by other links located along the state boundary. Image registration results are listed below in section The images were rectified and saved as new images using the ARC/INFO GIS <rectify> command. Each image was imported into the ArcView (v.3.0a) GIS program for conversion to a ARC/INFO grid using the Spatial Analyst software. Each gridded image was automatically cropped to the New Jersey state limits using a vectorized boundary coverage (nj30x60m in section 5.2) resulting from clipping the set of 30 x 60 minute geographic tiles with the vectorized state boundary coverage . All grids were then merged into a statewide grid (njtopo100) using the ARC/INFO GIS GRID <merge> command. Gridded images for each of three sheets (north, central, and south) were then clipped to the vectorized boundary of each sheet using ArcView Spatial analyst with the gridclp.ave script. Each grid was converted to a new TIFF image using the ARC/INFO <gridimage> command. The following is an excerpt from a U.S. Geological Survey metadata file outlining the processing steps involved in the production of a standard DRG product. This information is supplied here in lieu of including all metadata files for all source images: PROCESS DESCRIPTION: The production procedures, instrumentation, hardware, and software used in the collection of standard DRG products vary depending on systems used at the contract, cooperator or USGS production sites. The majority of DRG data sets are acquired through government contract. The process step describes, in general, the process used in the production of standard DRG data sets. 1. Production of a DRG begins with the scanning of a paper 7.5-minute topographic map (map1) on a highresolution scanner. Scanning resolutions range from 500 - 1000 dpi with the output file running between 160-300 MB. 2. Removal of screens (descreening) and color quantization to reduce the number of colors also takes place during the scanning phase. 3. The raw scan file is then transformed and geo-referenced using UTM coordinates of the sixteen 2.5- minute grid ticks, which are obtained using the in-house produced program COORDAT and stored in a ground control file. Those sixteen 2.5-minute ticks are interactively visited and assigned their respective UTM coordinates. USGS program XSHAPES4 then performs a piecewise linear rubber sheet transformation. 4. An output resolution of 2.4 meters (8.2 feet) is chosen in order to resample the file to 250 dpi. 5. The image file is converted to a TIFF and further reduced by converting the file to a run length encoding Packbits compression(type 32773). 6. The color palette of the compressed DRG is then standardized by replacing the original RGB values assigned during the scanning process with standard RGB value combinations using the in-house produced TIFFREMAP program. 7. Prior to archiving the DRG undergoes the following quality assurance procedures: The color index values of each DRG are checked to ensure the RGB combinations are consistent with the standardized color palette. All DRG files are inspected to ensure that they are geometrically consistent with normal map presentation. Selected DRG's are checked to ensure that data elements in the DRG metadata file correspond to the map collar information and to the information in the associated image file. Selected DRG's are checked for geo-referencing accuracy by comparing the book value of latitude and longitude tick marks with corresponding tick intersections in the DRG image. Transformations are checked on selected DRG's by comparing the positions of well defined points, such as UTM grid intersections in the graphic product, with the corresponding image points in the DRG. Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) GIS vector coverage of 7-1/2' tiles. The set of images meets the National Map Accuracy Standard (NMAS) for the 1:100,000 scale based on this analysis (not more than 10% of the points tested shall be in error more than 166.67 feet). IMAGE REGISTRATION RESULTS: The following statistics stem from registering the 14 30 x 60 minute sheets covering the New Jersey region into NAD83 State Plane Coordinate feet. These individual sheets have been merged and reformatted into a new set of images.
