"TOMORROW'S
FUTURE PLANTED TODAY"
New Jersey's 50th Anniversary of Celebrating Arbor
Day
April 30, 1999
Every year on the last Friday in April, students and adults
alike join together and celebrate one of our most valuable
natural resources - TREES!
On this annual tree planting day, Arbor Day, thousands of
seedlings are planted throughout New Jersey and across the
nation, reminding all of us about the important role trees
play in our daily lives.
Arbor Day was officially designated a holiday in 1949 by
the New Jersey state legislature. The observance of Arbor
Day by schools, civic organizations and municipalities usually
includes programs designed to emphasize the importance of
trees and their many benefits as well as encourage tree plantings
to promote a "greener" future.
The New Jersey Community Forestry Program would like to
invite all residents to participate in this commemorative
50th anniversary of Arbor Day. Here are some suggestions on
how you can help get things started:
- Organize or get involved in an Arbor Day program.
- Learn about the selection, planting and care of trees.
- Volunteer to help with the beautification or environmental
programs conducted by your school, civic club, or town.
- Report hazardous conditions and vandalism involving trees
to the proper authorities.
- Protect the health and value of your trees with a regular
maintenance program of feeding, pruning, pest management
and damage repair.
- Plant a tree and plant it right on the proper site!
