In response to the passing of the New Jersey Shade Tree & Community Forestry Assistance Act in 1996, the New Jersey Community Forestry Program's 2008 Green Community Grants will be awarded to communities for the development of comprehensive community forestry management plans.

The Act, which was passed on December 5, 1996, allows New Jersey communities to obtain liability protection under the New Jersey Tort Claims Act for their shade tree programs. However, in order to qualify for this protection, shade tree commissioners or other community representatives must develop a community forestry plan for their community, as well as attend the state's training skills and accreditation program. This $2,000 grant allows a county or municipality to hire an outside firm to assist in the production of a community forestry management plan.

Applicants are awarded through a lottery system and are then ranked and placed on a list. Funding is awarded when it becomes available and this continues until all applicants have been funded. The only eligibility requirement is a completed application and intent to oversee the completion of the management plan. A minimum matching amount of $1,000 is necessary, either cash or in-kind services.

Community Stewardship Incentive Program (CSIP) Grant

Currently, the New Jersey Community Forestry Program is not offering these grants. Please check back often for updates.

CSIP grants allows municipalities and counties to implement their Community Forestry Management Plan. (See Green Communities Challenge Grant.)

This grant is a cost-sharing grant that is evaluated by the New Jersey Community Forestry Council. Only municipalities and counties with approved management plans and two CORE trained individuals are eligible. The cost-share ratio is seventy-five percent grant to twenty-five percent match of cash or in-kind services.
