Each
year, hundreds of towns and cities across America are achieving
public recognition for their community tree program by becoming
a Tree City.
The Tree City USA program is designed to recognize those
communities that effectively mange their public tree resources
and to encourage the implementation of community tree management
based upon four standards. These four standards provide a
structure for a Community Forestry Program, and also help
provide an awareness and appreciation of trees among New Jersey's
residents.
Under the four standards, a Tree City community must have:
- an official tree board or department charged by ordinance
to develop and administer a comprehensive community tree
program for the care of trees on public property.
- the existance of a community tree ordinance designating
a tree board or department and citing minimum standards
for tree protection and maintenance.
- a comprehensive tree management program supported by $2
per capita per year and an annual work plan (for tree management).
- an official Arbor Day ceremony and proclamation.
Tree City communities receive a walnut mounted plaque, a
Tree City USA flag, and highway signs for community entrances.
Tree City communities are also eligible for free tube seedlings
and bonus points toward grants. Awards are presented at the
official New Jersey State Arbor Day Ceremony.
