2008 SPIRIT of the JERSEYS

Cub Scouts

The Spirit of the Jerseys State History Fair offers several opportunities for Tiger Cubs, Wolf Cubs & Bear Cubs to meet Achievements and Electives, for Webelos to meet Badge Requirements and for all Cub Scouts to meet requirements for the Academics and Sports Program. It is up to the Akela to work with the Cub Scout to ensure the requirements are met. Visit www.njhistoryfair.org for a list of participating organizations.

Tiger Cubs

Achievements

1G Visit the Washington Crossing State Park Visitor Center Museum where you can learn about General George Washington’s famous 1776 Crossing of the Delaware and the Ten Crucial Days; or visit the Johnson Ferry House to see live demonstrations of 18 th century domestic arts.

3G Watch a 19 th century Baseball Game between the Flemington Neshanocks and the Elizabeth Athletic Club. The rules from 1870s will be explained before the game and children will get an opportunity to hit a pitched ball after the game.

4G Watch members of the Hunterdon Radio Theater broadcast live at the Fair. Three family-friendly radio plays will be performed throughout the day.

5G Take a walk along Continental Lane which stretches the length of the Fairgrounds. This quarter-mile hike is just right for Tiger Cubs.

Electives

3 Fun and Games: Participate in the annual Who’s Who in History Scavenger Hunt. Ask for a Scavenger Hunt form which has clues about famous people associated with New Jersey’s history. Each of these famous people will be portrayed by actors and can be found wandering throughout the Fair. Collect autographs and you can win a prize. Prizes are available for children.

22 Picnic Fun: What better place to have a picnic than a beautiful park. Dens and families can bring their own food or purchase food from one of our food vendors. For a list of available food vendors, please check the website at www.njhistoryfair.org.

35 There are many outdoor playing opportunities in our 19 th century and 20 th century game areas. Come roll a hoop with a stick, play graces with a friend or participate in a race as you balance an egg upon a spoon.

Bear Cubs

3b The Fair includes actor portrayals of several famous Americans. You can learn about George Washington, Captain James Lawrence, James Fenimore Cooper, Walt Whitman, Abe Lincoln, Ulysses S. Grant, Mary Hays McCauley aka “Molly Pitcher” and others. Collect seven “signatures” and you can win a prize.

3c Visit the 18 th c. Johnson Ferry House and the 19 th c. Nelson House. Both will be open for visitation.

3d Visit the Washington Crossing State Park Visitor Center Museum where you can learn about General George Washington’s famous 1776 Crossing of the Delaware and the Ten Crucial Days; or visit the Johnson Ferry House to see live demonstrations of 18 th century domestic arts.

4a Attend the Native New Jersey presentation of dancing, drumming, storytelling and history

8d Learn about Genealogy with the Genealogical Society of New Jersey and the Central Jersey Genealogical Club. Take part in a bucket brigade with the NJ Fire Engine and Equipment Museum. Visit the exhibit on the Historic Stockton School and learn about NJ’s oldest 3-room schoolhouse.

10a Spend a day exploring four centuries of NJ’s History at the Spirit of the Jerseys Fair.

11 Learn about four U.S. Presidents at the Spirit of the Jerseys Fair. George Washington, Abraham Lincoln and Ulysses Grant will all be portrayed by actors. The Grover Cleveland Birthplace State Historic Site sponsors the 19 th century game area where you can learn about President Cleveland’s youth and his political career. You can even learn his connection to the Baby Ruth candy bar.

4 Learn about radio communication with the Hunterdon Radio Theater’s live radio broadcast. Try your hand at Morse Code with Historic Speedwell’s hands-on exhibit.

Scholar

9 Visit the exhibit on the Historic Stockton School and learn about NJ’s oldest 3-room schoolhouse.
