NOTATIONS:

* - Not operating due to low water yield.

This table reports DEP results for test well water samples split with PSEG. DEP's certified contract laboratories, Eberline Services and Sanford, Cohen and Associates analyzed these samples. DEP continues to work with PSEG on analyzing additional samples. Near field wells were drilled to 20 feet; Far field wells were drilled to 80 feet. Well elevations K 20 foot and P 20 foot did not contain sufficient water for sample collection and analysis.

"Phase" refers to the stage of the groundwater sampling product. Each phase is designed to determine the nature and extent of the release of water from the Salem facility.  Various temporary wells were converted into permanent locations.

  • Phase III of the study included the installation of wells in two sub phases: (1) a set of wells within the site's cofferdam, (Near Field Wells) which bounds the perimeter of the Salem Generating Station, drilled to a 20 foot depth; (2) a set of wells beyond the cofferdam (Far Field Wells) designed to monitor groundwater quality outside the cofferdam, drilled to an 80-foot depth.

  • Phase IV included additional monitoring wells located beyond the cofferdam (Second Quarter 2003) to further augment the monitoring network.

  • Phase V includes wells both within and beyond the cofferdam and at various depths ranging from 20-feet through 40-feet deep. These wells were strategically placed in locations close to the expected release point and potential pathways to the environment. "S/D" for several Phase V wells (see sample location map) refers to "shallow" and "deep" from the SAME well.  The shallow depth is approximately 25 feet and the deep sample is approximately 40 feet.

  • Seven additional groundwater monitoring/extraction wells were installed between May and June 2004. The locations of these wells were selected for the purpose of enhancing the performance of the groundwater extraction system during the full-scale implementation of the groundwater remediation and to serve as contingency extraction well locations. Originally, Wells AN, AO, AP, AQ, AR, AS and AT were designed specifically for use as Groundwater Extraction System (GES) wells. Presently, eight "8" wells comprise the GES (Wells S, AB, AD, AJ, AN, AO, AS and AT) as part of the Remedial Action Work Plan (RAWP).

  • Two supplemental wells (CA & CB) were installed in December 2006 to evaluate the extent of tritium in ground water in the vicinity of Well K.

(1) New Jersey Groundwater Quality Standards (NJGWQS) are the same as the New Jersey Surface Water Quality Standards and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency drinking water standards for radionuclides.

(2) Some results in this table are reported as Not Detectable (ND). This indicates that the result obtained was less than the minimum detectable activity (MDA) for that radionuclide.

(3) A hyphen "-" indicates samples were analyzed for tritium only.

(4) A number sign "#" indicates I-131 exceeced three half lives after collection before being counted.

A map showing sample locations is available for download here.
