ROUTINE ACTIVITIES OF THE RADIOACTIVE MATERIALS SECTION

RMS staff are involved in a variety of radiation protection activities, including:

  1. Licensing of approximately 490 facilities to possess and use naturally occurring and accelerator produced radioactive material (NJAC 7:28-4)
  2. Processing approximately 460 amendments to state licenses annually (NJAC 7:28-4)
  3. Registering NRC licensed radioactive material at approximately 500 facilities in the state (NJAC 7:28-3)
  4. Maintaining the Radiation Protection Programs' NRC license for the possession of by-product radioactive material (10 CFR)
  5. Performing approximately 150 inspections of New Jersey licensed radioactive material users annually (NJSA 26:2D-9(j) and NJAC 7:28-4.14)
  6. Performing approximately 80 investigations of radiation incidents annually (NJSA 26:2D-9(j))
  7. Reviewing applications to other New Jersey governmental agencies regarding the discharges to the environment of radioactive material to determine compliance with the New Jersey Radiation Protection Code and Act, as well as federal regulations (NJSA 26:2D-9(d))
  8. Assisting in the department's emergency response efforts involving the major nuclear power plants in NJ (NJSA 26:2D-45)
