  1. Other than a licensed doctor, who can operate an x-ray machine source bone densitometry unit?

    Since an x-ray tube is used as the source of ionizing radiation, only a licensed diagnostic radiologic technologist is permitted to operate this unit.

  2. Other than a licensed doctor, who can operate fluoroscopic x-ray equipment?

    A licensed diagnostic radiologic technologist can operate fluoroscopic equipment provided that a licensed doctor is in the room and directing the procedure. A technologist cannot use fluoroscopic equipment to determine radiographic positioning.

  3. Other than a licensed doctor, who can operate an x-ray simulator for the planning of radiation therapy treatments?

    Either a licensed radiation therapy technologist or diagnostic radiologic technologist can operate an x-ray simulator. A diagnostic radiologic technologist cannot perform therapy treatments.

  4. Can a licensed diagnostic radiologic technologist intravenously administer contrast media and flushing (saline, heparin) solutions?

    According to the Board of Medical Examiners' (BME) regulations (N.J.A.C.13:35-6.20), a licensed diagnostic radiologic technologist is permitted, provided that the technologist and facility has complied with the BME’s regulations.  Any additional questions should be directed to the BME at 609-826-7100.

  5. Can a licensed diagnostic radiologic technologist administer contrast media through a preexisting central line, administer glucagon or use a power injector?

    According to the Board of Medical Examiners' (BME) regulations (N.J.A.C.13:35-6.20), a licensed diagnostic radiologic technologist is permitted to perform these functions, performed that the technologist and the facility has complied with the BME’s regulations.  Any additional questions should be directed to the BME at 609-826-7100.

  6. Can a nuclear medicine technologist administer materials other than radiopharmaceuticals?

    Yes, provided that the material and its administration complies with the BME's regulations (N.J.A.C.13:35-6.20).  Any additional questions should be directed to the BME at 609-826-7100.

  7. Can a licensed diagnostic radiologic technologist performed dental x-ray procedures?

    Yes

  8. Who can operate a CT scanner?

    Other than a licensed doctor, CT procedures must be performed by a licensed diagnostic radiologic technologist. CT procedures that are performed as part of a fusion imaging procedure such as PET/CT or SPECT/CT may be performed by a licensed fusion imaging CT technologists provided that the technologist is also a licensed nuclear medicine technologist. The licensed fusion imaging CT technologist is also permitted to use x-ray equipment to perform attenuation correction.

  9. Do you need to be licensed to perform ultrasound or MRI procedures in New Jersey?

    No.

  10. Can a licensed chest radiologic technologist perform mammographic or portable chest x-ray procedures?

    No. These procedures are beyond their scope of practice.

  11. Do I need to complete any continuing education courses to renew my license?

    No. Continuing education is not a requirement for the renewal of a NJ license. However, continuing education is required by many national certifying agencies and is a requirement under the Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA).

  12. Can a licensed dental radiologic technologist perform a wrist x-ray exam to determine bone age of the patient?

    No. This procedure is beyond the scope of practice of a licensed dental radiologic technologist.

  13. How can I get a license, if my old license cannot be renewed?

    Before a license can be issued, the individual would need to submit a license application with a current certification card issued by a recognized national certifying agency (such as ARRT, NMTCB, ASCP, DANB) or pass a retake licensing examination. If the individual wishes to apply for the State examination, the individual will need to submit an examination application with proof the he/she has graduated from an approved program (diploma) or was previously licensed by the Department of Environmental Protection.
