NUCLEAR MEDICINE TECHNOLOGY

A Nuclear Medicine Technologist is permitted to perform all nuclear medicine procedures. A detailed scope of practice can be found at N.J.A.C. 7:28-24. A nuclear medicine technologist is not permitted to operate x-ray equipment for attenuation correction or perform the CT portion of a fusion imaging procedure such as PET/CT or SPECT/CT unless the technologist is also licensed in limited fusion imaging CT technology or is a licensed diagnostic radiologic technologist.

Education Requirement:

Completion of a course of study in a nuclear medicine technology program approved by the Department of Environmental Protection (Department) or its equivalent as determined by the Department. For a list of Department approved schools click here. The Department has determined that the Joint Review Committee on Education in Nuclear Medicine Technology (JRCNMT) and the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB) education requirements are equivalent. If you did not complete one of the above, you must submit information contained in the examination/license appendix.

Examination Eligibility:

To be eligible for an examination, you must successfully complete a Department approved educational program or its equivalent. Eligible candidate should apply directly to the American Registry for Radiologic Technology (ARRT) or the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB) for examination.

If you are ineligible for the ARRT or NMTCB examination, you can apply to the Department for its examination.

License Application and Requirements:

To become licensed in nuclear medicine technology, the applicant must meet the following requirements:

1. Be at least 18 years of age at the time of the application;
2. Complete at least a high school level education in the United States or its equivalent;
3. Complete the above educational requirement;
4. Be of good moral character as determined by the Department;
5. Pass either the New Jersey licensing examination or ARRT or NMTCB examination or another state license examination within three years of the date of application and maintain a current ARRT or NMTCB certification or state license*. However, if the examination was passed more than three years from the date of application, the application most maintain a current ARRT or NMTCB certification or state license* and has engaged in the practice of nuclear medicine technology for at least 1,000 hours during the preceding three years; and
6. Submit to the Department a complete application.

* If you passed another state's examination, you must submit proof of a current state nuclear medicine license and information from that state agency regarding its licensing examination.
