This guide, for use with secondary students, focuses on information and issues that encompass the topic of water conservation. It is a collection of innovative activities and case studies that are interactive, easy to use, challenging and engaging for students.
The Conserve Water Educators' Guide was developed by The Watercourse, a non-for-profit science and education program based at Montana State University in Bozeman, Montana. The Watercourse specializes in the development of educational materials on water and water-related management issues and has a goal of building informed leadership in resource decision making. The Watercourse also developed another curriculum supplement, Project WET (Water Education for Teachers). The guide can be purchased directly from the state's Project WET Coordinator. The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection is a co-sponsor of Project WET in New Jersey.
This guide offers young people the information and tools needed to become responsible stewards of water resources and to later become informed leaders and decision makers within their own communities.
Activities in the guide have been field tested by educators and students and are presented in a proven and practical format for classroom use.
The case studies illustrate concepts and issues in real-life and thought provoking terms. They are oriented toward small group work sessions and are set up to mimic the process of evaluation and decision making that actually face water users.
The section in the guide called "Water Conservation Celebrations" contains activities that help move students beyond the classroom and into the community at large. Educators are provided with information on how to organize and implement celebrations that increase a school and community's awareness and appreciation of water conservation topics, practices and issues.
The thinking and process skills featured in the guide are based on those advocated by the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
