The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is pleased to announce the application process for the 2006 Governor’s Environmental Excellence Awards. Originally called the New Jersey Environmental Excellence Awards, the program has been renamed to reflect Governor Jon S. Corzine’s support and interest.

This awards program was established six years ago by DEP to recognize outstanding environmental performance, programs and projects in the state. Each year, interest and support for this program has grown and with the support of the governor, DEP anticipates continued growth for 2006. Educators and youth leaders are encouraged to review and apply for recognition in the various award categories.

Winners of the 2006 Governor’s Environmental Excellence Awards will be invited to an awards ceremony and press event hosted by the Governor in the fall.

In addition to the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, the New Jersey Corporation for Advanced Technology (NJCAT) and the State League of Municipalities are co-sponsors of this program.

• Deadline for submission: September 22, 2006
• Award categories include: Clean Air; Clean and Plentiful Water; Healthy Ecosystems; Innovative Technology; Land Conservation; Safe and Healthy Communities; Environmental Education/Student Led Project; Environmental Stewardship; and Environmental Leadership
• Award recipients will be notified in October or November 2006
• Awards will be presented at an awards ceremony and press event hosted by the governor in the fall
• Award winners will be offered the opportunity to submit a poster on their project for display at the ceremony
