HISTORY OF HERE TODAY HERE TOMORROW SERIES
Here Today, Here Tomorrow - Recycled! is the product of a second revisions process sponsored by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to this solid waste curriculum supplement. The Here Today, Here Tomorrow series of curriculum supplements have existed in New Jersey since the early 1980s.
The original Here Today, Here Tomorrow curriculum guide focused on energy, solid waste and recycling and was produced by the Conservation and Environmental Studies Center, Inc., in the early 1980s. It was developed, field tested and evaluated in New Jersey's Medford School District in 1982 using funds provided by the New Jersey Department of Education and was distributed in eleven additional school districts. The New Jersey Departments of Environmental Protection and Energy later became sponsors of the supplement and distributed it statewide using funds from the New Jersey Recycling Act.
Here Today, Here Tomorrow - Revisited resulted from the first DEP revision process of this original guide in the early 1990's. This second version was designed for use with grades 4 - 8. Its contents reflected the state's more recent policies and challenges related to waste management and recycling, as well as more current classroom needs and issues. A group of New Jersey teachers, along with solid waste and recycling professionals, worked together to update and revise the materials. It was made publicly available in 1994 and remained in print throughout the 1990s. Eventually it became outdated and out of print, though DEP staff continued to receive requests for it from educators up through 2004.
