MentorPower pairs mentors in various environmental and science professions from business,
government and nonprofit organizations with high school students. Together, the mentors and students create
research-oriented or community service projects that highlight real environmental problems in the students'
communities. The high school students integrate the results of the research and fieldwork into lesson plans
that they then deliver to their local elementary school classes. Some students even offer and execute viable
solutions to the environmental problems they've identified. This program is being implemented in the urban
Trenton and suburban Princeton areas.
Highlights
Professionals are recruited as mentors from a variety of business and
government agencies, including NJDEP, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Educational Testing Services (ETS),
FMC, General Motors, and a host of others.
Students develop critical thinking skills while learning how to apply
scientific theory to real-life situations. Choosing a science project, conducting field research and working
with a mentor provides the students with a positive and successful experience.
Students display their completed projects and share their experiences as
participants at the MentorPower Fair. Guests in attendance include mentors, students, parents, teachers,
friends, and sponsors.
Target Audience(s)
