Radon Alert Lesson Plans and Activities

Radon Alert is a series of classroom investigations and activities exploring radon and its health effects. The activities were originally designed to support the New Jersey Department of Education's core course proficiencies for biology, earth science, chemistry, physics and the general academic course framework at the elementary, junior high and high school level. The lessons have been also correlated with the State Core Course Curriculum Standards.

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas given off by uranium found in nearly all soils. It can become trapped in buildings and build up to high concentrations which can lead to cancer in humans. In fact, radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer, and the leading cause for non-smokers.

Highlights

  • These lessons and activities can easily be incorporated into physical science, math, language arts, social studies, civics, general health and some vocational technology courses.
