The Bayshore Floodgate is located
at the junction of Waackaack and Thorns Creeks along the
southern shore of the Raritan Bay. Constructed in 1973
as part of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineer's Beach Erosion
Control and Hurricane Protection Project, the facility
consists of a large floodgate and pump station at the base
of the Raritan Bay as well as a series of levees and dikes
that hold back floodwaters during large storm events.
The
Bureau of Coastal Engineering has undertaken responsibility
for the operation and maintenance of the facility on
a 24-hour a day basis, protecting the communities of
Keansburg, Hazlet and Middletown from coastal storms
impacting the area. |
