“Best available retrofit technology (BART)” is an add-on exhaust particulate emissions control device that can be used on or in a regulated vehicle or off-road equipment, at a reasonable cost to achieve substantial reductions of fine particulate diesel emissions. Only those retrofit devices certified by the California Air Resources Board (CARB) through the issuance of an Executive Order or USEPA through the issuance of a Verification Letter are acceptable under the diesel retrofit law. The “BART levels” indicate the minimum amount of reduction of particulate matter achieved by the retrofit device.
- BART 1 achieves a minimum particulate emissions reduction of 25%
- BART 2 achieves a minimum particulate emissions reduction of 50%
- BART 3 achieves a minimum particulate emissions reduction of 85%

* BART installation requirements do not apply to engines in this category that are rated from 175-750 horsepower and were certified to a particulate emissions standard of 0.015 g/bhp-hr, or rated above 750 horsepower and were certified to a particulate emissions standard of 0.03 g/bhp-hr phased in from 2011 to 2015. |
