NEW JERSEY WATERSHED AMBASSADORS PROGRAM
Watershed Management Area 10
Millstone

Hello! My name is Andy White and I am the AmeriCorps New Jersey Watershed Ambassador in the Millstone Watershed Management Area (WMA 10) for 2007-2008. I am stationed in Pennington at the Stony Brook-Millstone Watershed Association and will be educating students and community members in the 26 surrounding municipalities about watershed-related issues. Some of these issues are nonpoint source pollution, human impact on water quality, and best management practices to maintain a healthy watershed. It is a pleasure to protect our watershed area and serve portions of Mercer, Middlesex, Monmouth, Somerset and Hunterdon Counties. Together, we can keep our state tidy and pretty.

I graduated from Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania with a B.S. in Biology in May 2007. My major allowed me to branch out and get a taste of all the facets of science including biology, chemistry, physics, psychology, and most recently, environmental studies. I was an avid member of the nature-charged Gettysburg Environmental Concerns Organization, which campaigned for biodiesel in campus facility vehicles, replaced hundreds of incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent ones, and staged a successful lake clean-up in the spring. I also served in a number of tutoring and mentoring programs at the local elementary schools during my four-year tenure at Gettysburg.

Now I am excited to bring my environmental passion back to my home state and spread watershed awareness, intellect, and stewardship to schools and volunteer groups. I am available to make presentations to educate about the movement of water in our communities, how we contaminate it, and what simple changes can make a real difference. Additionally, I can guide groups out to local streams and train them how to carry out visual and biological assessments. Our carefully collected stream data can be analyzed by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) to track down the origin of harmful nonpoint source pollution in the community.

As your watershed ambassador, I am a free resource to you. I can supply you with information about WMA 10, present at your school, train people how to monitor waterways, organize river clean-ups, lead a variety of interactive activities, and so much more. I look forward to being an active link in the community and hope to reach as many people as possible about watershed management in New Jersey. Please do not hesitate to contact me. We can keep the Garden State super clean.
