NEW JERSEY WATERSHED AMBASSADORS PROGRAM
Watershed Management Area 11
Central Delaware
My name is Helaine Liwacz and I am the 2007-2008 AmeriCorps Watershed Ambassador for New Jersey's Watershed Management Area 11 (WMA 11). WMA 11 includes Mercer, Hunterdon and parts of Monmouth County. WMA 11 is unique in that it covers a large expanse of the Delaware River and its tributaries. I am committed to protecting the health of this watershed and to educating any and all residents living in this area about their watershed.
My office is located at the Delaware River Basin Commission in scenic West Trenton. I encourage anyone seeking information, training or school activities about watershed management to contact me at this location.
Since elementary school, I knew I wanted to pursue a career in environmental science and public policy, education and outreach. I graduated from Marist College in Poughkeepsie, New York in 2004, with a Bachelor's of Science in Environmental Science. This past summer I finished my Masters Degree in Political Science at Temple University in Philadelphia. I am extremely excited to be a part of the AmeriCorps Watershed Ambassadors Program. This program provides an opportunity to educate people of all ages about watershed management while demonstrating how small changes can truly help protect our natural resources.
I am available to make presentations at schools and to any interested community groups. These presentations will focus on watershed management, nonpoint and point source pollution, the impact of human development on stream ecosystems and stormwater management. Additionally, I am available to train any individual or groups on stream monitoring techniques. These techniques include both visual and biological assessments, which can be used by the NJDEP to gauge the effects and impacts of pollution in your watershed. All training, outreach programs and educational activities are free of charge.
For more information on Watershed Management Area 11 or if you wish to schedule a presentation, training, stream clean-up, stormdrain labeling or any other interactive and educational activity please feel free to contact me at the Delaware River Basin Commission. I look forward to being an active part of your community so that together we can make New Jersey a better place for ourselves, our children and our children's children.
