NEW JERSEY WATERSHED AMBASSADORS PROGRAM
Watershed Management Area 17
Maurice, Salem, Cohansey

My name is Jonathan Shaffer, and I am the Watershed Ambassador for Watershed Management Area 17 (Salem and Cumberland Counties) for 2007-2008. I work with the Cumberland County Improvement Authority in Millville, NJ. I act as an Ambassador in two main ways. I visually and biologically assess local waterways to determine water quality, and I work with the community by doing presentations for schools and organizations in the community. My goal as an Ambassador is to improve water quality and involve others in watershed issues. Everybody is affected by their local watershed and it is important to be familiar and active within your watershed.

I attended the University of Connecticut and earned a B.S. in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology as well as a minor in Anthropology. I recently moved to southern New Jersey and was blown away by some of the beautiful areas and pristine wildlife. I am eager to work in the field and do my part for both the environment and the community. Our environment's health supports us and also relies on our assistance. Together we can really make a difference.

I await meeting citizens and school groups as well as relaying information about watersheds, watershed management, nonpoint source pollution, and methods to improve watersheds. If you are interested in becoming involved with your watershed, I am available to train for visual and biological monitoring of streams and other waterways.

Who doesn't like being outside playing in the water? Do not hesitate to contact me as I am a free resource and want to educate all those interested in watershed management and nonpoint source pollution. We can help our environment and have a lot of fun doing it. I look forward to hearing from you soon.
