NEW JERSEY WATERSHED AMBASSADORS PROGRAM
Watershed Management Area 5
Hackensack, Hudson, Pascack

Hello, my name is Svetlana Kukhar. I am the 2008-2009 Watershed Ambassador for New Jersey's Watershed Management Area 5 (WMA 5) which consists of the Hackensack River, Hudson River and Pascack Brook. I will be working with my Host Agency, The Hackensack Riverkeeper, to educate students and the community about important issues concerning our watersheds.

Our watershed includes the areas of Hudson and Bergen counties, the most urbanized areas in NJ, and has experienced many environmental impacts, such as point and non-point source pollution. Through education and partnership with the community, I believe that we can become better stewards of the precious natural resources that our waterways provide.

I have always loved the outdoors. My love to “mother-nature” and sincere desire to protect it for our generation as well as for our descendants constantly reminds me to tie my life with the environment. This Summer I completed the Environmental and Public Health course at Rutgers University. This experience gives me opportunity to approach one step closer to my target and also for you, my future audience.

My service is for you and I’m available to give presentations to schools and any community groups that are interested in learning about the importance of watersheds and how to minimize pollutants that may enter your waterways. I can also teach groups how to do biological and visual assessments of local streams and rivers. This is a fun, hands-on way to learn about your watershed and about the water quality in your own backyard. We can even send our information to the NJDEP to assist them in determining the health of streams and rivers in your area.

Additionally, my native language is Russian. I hope it will help the Russian community to learn in their native language about watersheds.

Please do not hesitate to contact me to assist you in educating the community about your watershed. I am looking forward to being an active member of this community. And my services are entirely FREE. Let's work together to keep New Jersey CLEAN.
