NEW JERSEY WATERSHED AMBASSADORS PROGRAM
Watershed Management Area 6
Upper and Mid Passaic, Whippany, Rockaway

Hello! My name is Erin Bye and I’m the 2008-2009 AmeriCorps Watershed Ambassador for Watershed Management Area 6 (WMA6). WMA6 consists of the Upper and Middle Passaic River, the Whippany River, and the Rockaway River watersheds that are found in parts of Morris, Essex, Union, Somerset, and Sussex County. I look forward to evaluating the quality of our streams and educating our surrounding communities about watershed management.

I recently graduated from Dickinson College in 2008 with a Bachelor’s Degree in English and a minor in creative writing. So why am I interested in the environmental field if my area of focus was English? Because I love the outdoors! Born and raised in NJ for my entire life, I am excited and honored to serve my home State’s efforts to protect the environment and increase public awareness of important issues concerning our watersheds. I am available to give presentations to schools and to community groups interested in learning about watersheds, how their actions may affect our waterways, and what they can do in the future to improve our watersheds. I welcome the opportunity to work with kids and adults of all ages and can target presentations to your particular watershed interest.

Furthermore, I can provide training for visual and biological monitoring of our local streams and rivers in order for you to learn more about your watershed and the water quality in your local community. You can gain knowledge about macroinvertebrates and the importance of gathering visual evidence to estimate the health of our water and its surrounding habitat. The information collected at these trainings can be used by the Department of Environmental Protection to determine the condition of the rivers and streams in your area.

I look forward to sharing my knowledge and passion for our local watersheds in a fun and educational way. As your Watershed Ambassador, I am a FREE resource, so please do not hesitate to contact me with questions and concerns or to arrange presentations, trainings, stream clean-ups, and/or other activities and events concerning WMA6. Let’s work together to keep our New Jersey watersheds clean!
