Watershed Management Area 2
Wallkill

Watershed Management Area 2 is also known as the Wallkill River Watershed and includes 11 townships in Sussex County. The Wallkill River Watershed is unique in that its headwaters begin at Lake Mohawk in Sparta Township and then flow north into New York, eventually emptying into the Hudson River.

The Wallkill Watershed is approximately 208 square miles in area, and is comprised of a variety of land uses including rural and centralized residential development, agriculture, commercial, recreational and industrial usage. Also located within this watershed area is the Wallkill National Wildlife Refuge. The refuge watershed/wetlands complex provides migratory and nesting habitats for numerous birds and waterfowl and is home to several endangered species.

Within Area 2, there are 4 subwatersheds: the Wallkill River, Pochuck Creek, Papakating Creek and Rutgers Creek Tributaries.

Active Projects

Section 319(h) NPS Grant: Streambank Restoration Project at Bassetts Bridge and at Route 565 on Wallkill River
U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service
This grant addresses existing physical, biological, and chemical impairments on the Wallkill River by developing and implementing two streambank restoration and stabilization projects at sites within the Wallkill River National Wildlife Refuge. Approximately 300 feet of shoreline will be stabilized, serving to both improve habitat and improve the existing water quality of the Wallkill River. Public awareness of streambank restoration and stabilization techniques will also be actively promoted through the two demonstration sites.

Section 319(h) NPS Grant: Lake Mohawk Stormwater Basin Alum Injection System
Sparta Township
Lake Mohawk has a long history of instituting management practices to deal with phosphorus input to the lake. A large lake community has developed around the lake which is dependant on septic systems. The use of alum injection was tried to see is a difference could be made in the nutrient levels in the lake and the subsequent algal production.

Section 319(h) NPS Grant: Black Creek Watershed Restoration and Protection Plan
Vernon Township
This project will achieve and preserve the load reductions recommended in the NJDEP fecal Coliform TMDL, restore stream health, and protect Category One tributaries in the Black Creek Watershed. Overall, the main goal of this grant is to determine the courses of action necessary to restore and protect water quality through the identification and location of specific nonpoint source abatement measures.

Section 319(h) NPS Grant: Watershed Restoration Plan for Clove Acres Lake and Surrounding Lakeshed
Sussex County Municipal Utilities Authority and Wallkill River Watershed Management Group
The work scope of this project includes a comprehensive assessment of Clove Acres Lake and the surrounding watershed in order to identify restoration and management techniques that address the total phosphorus and benthic macroinvertebrate impairments in the watershed. An extensive education and outreach program will be developed to target stakeholder involvement from all sectors of the community.

Section 319(h) NPS Grant: Watershed Restoration Plan for Papakating Creek and Surrounding Lakeshed
Sussex County Municipal Utilities Authority and Wallkill River Watershed Management Group
This project aims to assess and identify restoration and management techniques within the largely agricultural Papakating Creek watershed. The goal is to implement the recommended techniques in the future in order to achieve a reduction in total phosphorus and fecal Coliform loading to the Papakating Creek and tributaries. An extensive education and outreach program will be developed to target stakeholder involvement from all sectors of the community.
