Textile Enterprise -
- This unit
consists of cloth and knit garments, all textiles and bedding
operations. Seven shops operate twelve shifts in order to produce
a
product line consisting of over 20 standard items offered in various
sizes
to bring the total pieces available to well over 200. Product
development efforts secured orders that also had the shops making
orange safety vests with reflective stripes, bomber jackets, windbreakers,
work uniforms, embroidered shirts, orange snowsuits, snap front
shower robes, laundry bags and American flags. This industry produces
its own graded pattern markers and has provided markers for other
state correctional industries
as well. The textile enterprise represents one-third of DEPTCOR's
total annual sales with clothing sales alone at almost $5.6 million.
South Woods Enterprises -
- This unit
oversees the operation of three separate industries and the management
of two warehouses.
- Printing
& Graphics produces letterhead, envelopes, carbonless forms,
newsletters and customized printing and bindery. The shop is being
updated with new equipment in order to keep up with today's technology
and can now provide full color copies. An image setter also allows
customers to provide files digitally vs. paper medium, which improves
turn time and reduces human error.
- Sign Shop
fabricates almost 25,000 lbs. of aluminum and over 55,000 sq.
ft of reflective sheeting into custom interior & exterior
signage, which makes up 40% of overall annual sales. Traffic signs
however make up the majority of this industry's standard product
line that also includes signposts and hardware. Production of
over 2.4 million validation stickers for the Motor Vehicle Commission
makes up 38% of annual sales. Custom banners, binders, nameplates,
window lettering, vehicle markings and silk screening are also
available. This shop has its own graphics department and high
volume capability to produce a wide variety of standard and custom
items.
- The Shoe
Shop designed a shank free work boot, which is available in sizes
5 - 14, including half sizes through size 11. It's welt construction,
synthetic rubber sole and full grain leather uppers ensure superior
durability. This footwear is tailor-made for the correctional
population and with tan leather and light colored soles, it complements
the inmate's khaki uniform. Average production is at 180 pair
per day, which makes for quick order fulfillment. A limited inventory
of second quality work boots is available for inmates with a short-term
footwear need. There is also a limited inventory of both lace
and Velcro closure athletic shoes available.
Bayside Enterprise -
- A variety
of industries are included in this unit and in aggregate, represents
38% of DEPTCOR's total sales.
- The first
formal industry dating back to 1918 still operates today - the
Auto Tag Shop, which stamps over 3.2 million license plates annually
and ranks the second highest in sales at over $4.8 million. In
addition to the production numbers increasing over the years,
technology has also improved. Approximately fifty inmates are
responsible for the production of over 65 different designs ranging
from the standard two-color plate to a full color, full graphic
design. In addition to the aluminum plates, over 1 million temporary
registrations are also produced per year. Raw material consumption
annually includes 800,000 pounds of aluminum, over 1.8 million
square feet of reflective sheeting, 1.8 million bags and 80,000
cardboard flaps.
- The bakery
produces breads, rolls and baked desserts and generates over $3.3
million in sales annually. Typical production consumes an average
of 4.4 million pounds of white bread flour to produce almost 3.5
million loaves of white bread, which represents 53% of the Bakery's
overall sales. Wheat and rye bread, a variety of rolls, plain
and blueberry doughnuts, raisin and plain bagels, a choice of
plain, blueberry or corn muffins, vanilla and chocolate cakes
& cupcakes and a variety of cookies make up the balance of
their sales. Each year over 260,000 inmate hours are required
to accommodate production demands on the Bakery which recently
had to repair its flour silo and purchase a new water chiller.
- Prefabricated
structures and concrete products industries have evolved from
building basic sheds to prefabricated structures of many types,
including large overhead garages, vinyl-sided fully finished modular
buildings, gazebos, pavilions, cedar lifeguard stands and cabins.
Pressure treated wooden sign frames provide the finishing touches
to signs such as Smokey the Bear and Farmland Preservation. An
optional substitute for the typical, natural wood previously used
in our production of picnic tables and other wood products is
now available. Synthetic wood, called Trex, looks like wood, minus
the splinters, and is much more durable.
- Thirty-one
concrete landscaping products are poured and molded on an as needed
basis. Specialty concrete products are also available such as
security planters that weigh over 5,000 pounds. A joint venture
with SSCF vocational trades' welding shop allows a reinforced
concrete slab to be manufactured that is breakable for use in
urban search and rescue training. The concrete operation has also
ventured into utilizing a modified masonry product that can provide
a unique design and look to concrete products. In fact, the entrance
to Bayside State Prison was refinished with this new product.
- The janitorial
line offers 43 different products from mops and brooms
to ice scrapers, which are designed with the highest level of
safety specifically for the correctional environment. This industry
employs
26 inmates and two civilians.
Metal
& Furniture Enterprise -
- DEPTCOR's
complete line of metal cell furniture, storage shelving and custom
metal products, in addition to a line of office & systems
furniture and a new line of dormitory furnishings are all represented
in this unit. The combination of the furniture lines provides
the third highest percentage of overall sales. Customization of
system panel workstations, new ergonomic seating and powder coating
are all specialties of DEPTCOR. The metal shop utilizes a Powder
Coating painting process which is a safe, non-toxic material that
is environmentally friendly and provides superior durability at
a lower cost than liquid paint. Favorites of our furniture line
are the NJ ERGO, specially designed ergonomically correct chair,
which has nine different adjustment features to fit virtually
every need. The T.U.F. ergo chair is oversized to comfortably
accommodate officers and their accessory belts. Articulating keyboards
are also popular and incorporate all the recommendations of the
Health and Safety Manager of the State. A revived lamination shop
fabricates conference tables to match case goods such as desks,
credenzas and bookcases as well as various work surfaces to compliment
the Systems furniture. DEPTCOR can outfit an entire office, prison,
classroom or dormitory.
Warehousing & Logistics -
- During the
course of the year, four warehouses employing 36 civilians and
66 inmates -- located throughout the state -- managed the logistics
of using 40 trailers and 22 tractors to make over 12,500 deliveries.
(This includes the management and logistics of the Food Service
Warehouse for Regional Food Service.)
- The Central
Warehouse recycled over 251,000 pounds of aluminum from discarded
license plates for the NJ Division of Motor Vehicle Services.
- The warehouse
at South Woods State Prison began recycling wood pallets to realize
an annual savings of $1,500 as well as recycling cardboard, which
saves $500 per year.
