Employment record: total number of jobs:
FY 01 FY 02 FY 03 FY 04
  1,704 1,552 1,552 1,526

By providing work for inmates, DEPTCOR also provides jobs for civilians. In years past, the state's thousands of imprisoned men and women (who were generally in their prime work years) contributed very little to the economy, to reimbursing their victims, to supporting their families, or to defraying the cost of their incarceration. These days, highly developed industries employ inmates, allowing restitution and other financial obligations to be met. In FY 2003, 1552 jobs provided a total of $1,128,489 in wages paid to 2931 different inmates. In FY 2004, 1526 jobs provided a total of $1,074,087 in wages paid to 3,450 different inmates. Approximately thirty-three percent of these wages were garnished and distributed for restitution and other financial obligations.

Inmates are compensated based on the number of hours worked and the skill level achieved. DEPTCOR pays the highest compensation available for inmates, provides a "real life" working environment, and even offers certified training in some areas.
