Dissolved oxygen is reported in the Delaware River Flow and Storage report only during summer months when dissolved oxygen has the potential to fall to levels hazardous to fish and other aquatic life. For more information about dissolved oxygen and why it is so important to aquatic life, please refer to Frequently Asked Questions.

Schuylkill River at Vincent Dam, Maximum Temperature--Value represents the maximum water temperature reached for the day, in degrees Celsius, at Vincent Dam. Vincent Dam is located on the Schuylkill River approximately 0.3 miles south of Linfield, Pennsylvania. Water temperature is reported in the Delaware River Flow and Storage report only during summer months when rises in temperature due to high air temperatures and seasonal low flows may create unhealthy conditions for aquatic life. For more information about the effects of water temperature on aquatic life, please refer to Frequently Asked Questions.

Salt Front River Mile--Value represents the river mile location of the 7-day average chloride concentration of 250-mg/L (milligrams per liter). Chloride data is collected daily from the Reedy Island Jetty stream gage near Port Penn, Delaware, and from the Kimberly Clark Corporation in Chester, Pennsylvania. The 7-day average of chlorides from each of these sources is calculated and used to interpolate where on the Delaware River the 250-mg/L concentration of chlorides is located. When the salt front moves upstream of Chester, monitors located at Fort Mifflin, near the mouth of the Schuylkill River, and at the Ben Franklin Bridge are used for the interpolation. For more information about the salt line, chlorides, and specific conductance, please refer to Frequently Asked Questions. You also can locate the salt front in relation to other sites on the river by visiting our salt line web page.

The Normal Mid-month location for the salt front is represented by this value.

New York City Delaware Basin Storage--Value represents the combined total water storage, measured in billions of gallons, in the three reservoirs of the New York City Delaware system: Neversink Reservoir located along the Neversink River, Pepacton Reservoir located along the East Branch of the Delaware River, and Cannonsville Reservoir located along the West Branch of the Delaware River. New York City obtains more than half of its drinking water from these three reservoirs. For more information about the New York City Delaware Basin reservoirs, please refer to Frequently Asked Questions and the Reservoir Location Map).
"" BG-Total combined storage in billion gallons in the Neversink, Pepacton, and Cannonsville reservoirs.

"" % Capacity-Total percent of capacity of New York City Reservoirs. Calculated by dividing the daily storage in billion gallons by the total storage capacity, approximately 271 billion gallons, for all three reservoirs.

"Month" Average--Represents the mean flow value for the month to date.

BACK TO SAMPLE REPORT

Normal--Represents the median of the monthly mean flow values for a particular station based on the flow data period of record 1960-1999.

BACK TO SAMPLE REPORT

% of Normal--Value represents the percentage of the normal flow for the month.

NYC 24-hr Reservoir Observations--This section of the daily flow and storage report represents the following information about the upper basin's Neversink, Pepacton, and Cannonsville reservoirs:
"" Precipitation (Precip.) -The measured amount of precipitation that has fallen, in inches, over a 24-hour time period ending at 8 am the day of the report.
"" Usable- The amount of water, in billion gallons, available for use.
"" Storage %- The percent of capacity storage of water in the reservoir. Calculated by dividing the total amount of water available by the water storage capacity of the reservoir.
"" Draft- The amount of water diverted to supply water to New York City. Water from three of the reservoirs - Neversink, Pepacton, and Cannonsville - is diverted via aqueduct to Roundout Reservoir in the Hudson River Basin, where it continues its journey to NYC. More than half of New York City's water supply is drafted from these three Delaware River Basin reservoirs.

"" Directed Release- Water, measured in million gallons (MG), which is released under direction of the Delaware River Master from the upper basin reservoirs to meet the target flow of 1,750 cfs (during normal operations) at the U.S.Geological Survey (USGS) gaging station at Montague, New Jersey. For more information about direct releases and why they are required, please refer to Frequently Asked Questions.

BACK TO SAMPLE REPORT

Directed Releases-- This section of the daily flow and storage report represents the amount of water, in cubic feet per second, directed to be released from the lower basin reservoirs. Water is released from these reservoirs for the purpose of flow augmentation and preventing the salt line from advancing during dry periods. For more information about the lower basin reservoirs and directed releases, please refer to Frequently Asked Questions and the Reservoir Location Map.

"" BG Above or Below Drought Warning- The number of billion gallons the NYC reservoir storage is above or below the Drought Warning trigger value. Drought Warning operations begin on the day when reservoir storage drops below the Drought Warning trigger value.
"" BG Above or Below Drought- The number of billion gallons the NYC reservoir storage is above or below the Drought trigger value. Drought operations begin when reservoir storage remains below the Drought trigger value for five consecutive days.

"" BG Above or Below One Year Ago- The number of billion gallons the NYC reservoir storage is above or below the storage of one year ago.
