The Ice Jam Project,
jointly undertaken by the Delaware River Basin Commission and the U.S. Army
Corps of Engineers to control ice jam flooding in the Port Jervis, N.Y.-area.,
has been selected as a "Mitigation Success Story" by the Association
of State Flood Plain Managers' (ASFPM) Flood Mitigation Committee and the Federal
Emergency Management
Agency Mitigation Directorate, 1999.
The "Mitigation Success Story" report appears on the ASFPM web site at http://www.floods.org.
According to the ASFPM,
"The purpose of this document is twofold: to showcase examples of natural hazard mitigation activities and to
publicize the benefits of mitigation successes across our country. Hopefully, these examples can serve as
models for others to use and provide decision-makers with valuable information about how to formulate,
undertake and ultimately achieve natural hazard reduction in our communities."
The Ice Jam Project earlier received a "Special Recognition Award" presented by the Water Resources Association of the Delaware River Basin at its 18th Annual Recognition and Dinner Program on April 12, 2000, in Philadelphia.
