Photo of Groundbreaking Ceremony for AMD Remediation Projects in Mary D, Pa.

Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PADEP) Secretary Kathleen McGinty presented a check awarded to the Mary D Recreation and Schuylkill River Improvement Projects at the site of the Bell Colliery Abandoned/Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) remediation project near Mary D, Pa. in Schuylkill County. The event, announcing the groundbreaking for a new recreation facility and a series of AMD reclamation projects, took place on November 29, 2006.

Pictured in this photo are just a few of the dedicated individuals involved with this effort. From left to right are Dane Bickley of Exelon, Kathleen McGinty, William Reichert of the Schuylkill Headwaters Association, Todd and Mary Jane Stell of Stell Environmental Enterprises, Inc., Carol Collier of DRBC, and Curtis Peiper of PADEP.

The Bell Colliery site is one of five in the area that will be funded with grants from PADEP, as well as the William Penn Foundation, the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, and Exelon/DRBC; in all, four AMD sites will be treated, and a new recreational facility for the community of Mary D will be constructed. This project demonstrates the commitment and initiative its many partners to reduce the amount of pollutants AMD contributes to the Schuylkill’s headwaters, reclaim abandoned mine lands, and enhance the quality of life for area residents.
