The Sojourn is a non-profit event. The contributions of time, goods and services from our many sponsors and supporters allow us to keep participant costs as low as possible. There is a one-time registration fee of $10 per person. The additional daily fee covers lunch and shuttles, as well as program expenses and camping fees. The daily fee is $43 per adult and $25 per child age 12 and under. Canoe rental fee is $12 per person. If renting a canoe, only two participants are allowed per boat except that non-paddling children under age 12 may ride as a third person in parent's canoe without additional rental fee. Register by May 26, 2001 or a $20 late fee applies. Refunds will be given, minus a $50 processing fee, if a written request is received before June 1. No refunds will be given after June 1.
You may use your own river-worthy boat or rent a canoe at a discount. Life jackets and paddles are provided with rentals. Aluminum canoes are not recommended for the white water sections.
The Delaware River is suitable for all types of paddlers, from novice to expert. First-time paddlers will be most comfortable on sections noted as flat water. We will be paddling through relatively easy (Class I) and moderate (Class II) rapids on some days. Canoe instruction is available each morning. Participants must be physically capable of paddling a minimum five hours per day. We paddle between ten and 15 miles per day. We paddle rain or shine, so bring a complete rain suit, extra sweaters (wool or fleece works best), hat, sun screen with SPF 15 or greater, eyeglass retainers, drinking water, sunglasses, and a long sleeve shirt. Wear river shoes, river sandals, surf mocs or old sneakers. Bring waterproof containers for gear.
We encourage you to take advantage of the many varied programs presented. Daily safety briefings are mandatory.
Scholarships are available to teachers and students who reside within the Delaware River watershed as prized in a writing and arts contest. For details, please visit the Sojourn web page at www.state.nj.us/drbc/sojourn.
The Lord and/or Lady High Admiral
Individuals who have made a notable contribution to the stewardship of the Delaware River will be recognized each day as the Lord/Lady High Admiral.
The Delaware River Sojourn makes every effort to provide participants with a safe trip. The event is insured and sanctioned by the American Canoe Association, and as such you must sign a waiver and follow the instructions of the Sojourn Safety Staff. You must assume responsibility for your own safety and for any decisions affecting your safety. You must recognize and fully understand that any outdoor activity poses inherent hazards and risks. The National Canoe Safety Patrol will provide a mandatory safety briefing each day. Failure to follow instructions and unsafe acts will result in termination of trip participation without refund of fees.
Shuttles and GearLeave your vehicle at the rendezvous each day. Shuttles will transport you and your boat to and from the put-in or take-out. Your camping gear will stay with your vehicle.
Lunch is provided each day. Additional meals may be provided, compliments of Sojourn sponsors. For other meals, you are on your own and can go into town or cook at the campsite. You will receive a meal schedule upon registration. Sorry, we cannot accommodate special diets.
Camping is provided at commercial campgrounds, parks, or primitive group sites. All sites have toilets, drinking water, and access by emergency vehicles. Some sites may not have showers. Some sites may not accomodate by RVs.
