Abstract:
Tri County Community Action Partnership (Tri -County) has partnered with the Bridgeton Public School District to serve the educational community on important programs over the years. Now, the partnership will expand the depth and scope of two initiatives by aligning the Even Start program for young children and their families and 21st CCLC for students in grades 5 through 8 and their families. The Bridgeton Learners After-School Time Program (BLAST) will be designed around encouraging children to be the architects of their lives through academic, cultural, and healthy enrichment activities.
The BLAST program will be student-centered and meet the needs of the diverse population of four elementary schools in the district meeting at one center, the Buckshutem Elementary and Middle School. Although the basic structure of the after-school program will provide the necessary elements that research shows us in best practices, delivery of the programs will be in small interactive groups with common themes eliminating the fragmented “school day” appearance. For example, students will learn the benefit of working in study groups, utilize dialogue journals to incorporate writing, and public speaking about events important in their lives.
We believe the BLAST program will continue to encourage parental involvement as we expand the Even Start family activities. Entire families will have a community learning center as a place to learn and grow together after school.
