The FEA 21st Century Community Learning Centers Project, an afterschool program for students in grade eight at the Frank R. Conwell and Franklin L. Williams Middle Schools, runs from 3-6 PM. The project emphasizes academic preparation/support through project-based learning and provides information about, and practice in, the behaviors and attitudes needed to succeed in high school and beyond. This program offers broad experiences that enrich students culturally, physically and emotionally – activities developed in collaboration with community agencies and university and professional collaborators, delivered in a safe, secure and supportive learning environment.
Parental involvement will be provided through Parent University, a unique program that assists care-givers in developing their parenting skills that will elicit positive results in their children, both behaviorally and academically. The afterschool program consists of a Homework Zone Tutorial class in which students are provided assistance with their assignments and study skills. The enrichment classes are scheduled on a rotating basis and provide activities in language arts, mathematics, character education, physical education and media technology. The final component of the day is the recreation classes. Several examples of recreational choices are Yoga, Open Gym, ROTC, Miniature Golf, Jewelry Making, Healthy Cooking, Soccer Clinic, Total Music Experience, Photography, Gardening and World Languages.
