Abstract:
The Lakewood School District has established a diversified after-school program to provide supplemental and enriching educational opportunities to both local and private school students in safe, secure and supportive learning environments. Through outreach and partnership with various agencies we are able to offer an array of services at various locations and times to meet the needs of many children in our diverse community. Our program provides tutoring and homework help, one-on-one mentoring, computer instruction, science lab activities using the Liberty Science Center Curriculum, fine and performing art activities, enrichment lessons in literacy and math, and indoor and outdoor recreation. Character education is infused throughout all areas using the Six Pillars of Character Education curriculum. Bilingual and ESL teachers work with students with limited English proficiency throughout the school year as well as conducting an intensive summer program providing opportunities to practice English language skills related to academic and daily living in an out-of school time setting. Parent and family involvement is encouraged through literacy workshops, fun educational family activities and ESL and adult educational classes offered by the school district and partnering agencies.
