Abstract:
The Paterson Public School ("PPS") School District is proposing to provide afterschool services to 315 students from PS 15, PS 5, International High School ("IHS") and Garrett Morgan Academy ("GMA") High School in Paterson, New Jersey.  These are low performing schools - schools, and School 15 is one of the lowest performing schools in the state; in fact, the NJ DOE has named it a Priority School. Students are very poor; free lunch rates range from 74% to 96% of the student body. Few students have plans to attend college; many will not graduate from high school.

We believe our proposed 21 CCLC program can change this culture of under achievement.  We propose to offer a program at International High School that focuses on college and career.  This program will consist of 5 strands: College & Career Assessment, Job Preparation; Employment; College Preparation and Tours; and Guest Speakers.  These activities will provide students with the hard and soft skills to succeed in life and inspire, them to reach their potential.

For younger students we will deliver a program with a Performing Arts theme; we have selected this theme because research shows that students who participate in arts learning experiences often improve their achievement in other areas of life. Our program is designed to deeply engage students in the program, encourage regular school day attendance and academic performance, and help them develop increased self-confidence.

These supports can make the difference for the children of Paterson.  With our help, they can overcome the obstacles in their path, and develop the skills, attitudes and commitment necessary to achieve life success.
