Teacher Education Accreditation Council (TEAC)

The Teacher Education Accreditation Council (TEAC) is a nonprofit organization of institutions of higher education and other groups and individuals devoted to the improvement of academic degree programs for professional educators. The Council's primary work is to assure the public about the quality of these professional programs. It provides this assurance through a system accreditation that examines and verifies the evidence institutions of higher education have for their claim that they prepare competent, caring, and qualified professional educators.

The Council requires institutions to meet TEAC's standards of eligibility and capacity. More importantly it requires, in addition, that the program faculty submit a research monograph, the Inquiry Brief, which documents that the program seeking accreditation satisfies three basic principles of quality that require:

Red bullet point Evidence of student learning

Red bullet point Evidence that the assessment of student learning is valid

Red bullet point Evidence of the program's own continuous improvement and quality control.

The Council audits, or verifies, the evidence presented in the Inquiry Brief and evaluates whether the evidence supports the claim that the program prepares competent, caring, and qualified educators. Based upon the audit and its evaluation of the soundness of the evidence for the three quality principles, the Council accredits professional programs in education.

Approximately seventy programs have satisfied TEAC’s eligibility requirements and currently have candidate status in TEAC. Five programs have been accredited by TEAC: one, initial accreditation; two, new program accreditation; one, pre-accreditation; and one, provisional. The faculty members of approximately ten other programs have begun the process of developing an Inquiry Brief in which they document the evidence they possess about what their students have learned, the validity of their assessment of that learning, and the basis on which the program faculty makes its decisions to improve its programs.

TEAC is recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) and is currently being reviewed for recognition by the U.S. Department of Education.

National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE)

Teaching children—to recognize letters, to read for the first time, to understand how a tree grows—is one of the most important jobs in America. The nation’s future depends, in large part, on how well it is done.

NCATE is the profession’s mechanism to help establish high quality teacher preparation. Through the process of professional accreditation of schools, colleges and departments of education, NCATE works to make a difference in the quality of teaching and teacher preparation today, tomorrow, and for the next century. NCATE’s performance-based system of accreditation fosters competent classroom teachers and other educators who work to improve the education of all P–12 students. NCATE believes every student deserves a caring, competent, and highly qualified teacher.

NCATE is a coalition of 33 specialty professional associations of teachers, teacher educators, content specialists, and local and state policy makers. All are committed to quality teaching, and together, the coalition represents over 3 million individuals.

The U.S. Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation recognize NCATE as a professional accrediting body for teacher preparation.
