New Jersey Assessment of Skills and Knowledge (NJ ASK)
With the enactment of the NCLB Act, New Jerseys statewide assessment of elementary students has undergone further change. Under the provisions of this federal legislation, every state is required to administer annual standards-based assessment of all children in grade 3 through 8. Federal expectation is that each state will provide tests that are grounded in that states content standards and that assess students critical thinking skills in three content areas: language arts literacy, mathematics and science.
All New Jersey third and fourth grade students took the New Jersey Assessment of Skills and Knowledge for the first time in May 2003. Since the NJ ASK 3 was a field test in 2003, the first operational third-grade assessment will occur in spring 2004. The statewide science assessment, which is not required at every grade level, will be field tested at the fourth-grade level in 2004.
