New Jersey is among the 46 states that volunteered to participate in the 2009 NAEP state-level science assessment at grades 4 and 8. Approximately, 2,800 New Jersey students were assessed per grade level.
The 2009 NAEP science assessment was guided by a new NAEP framework that was updated to keep the content current with key developments in science, curriculum standards, assessments and research. Because of these recent changes, the 2009 NAEP science results cannot be compared with those from previous test administrations.
The 2009 framework is organized around three subscales: physical science, life science, and earth and space science
Please note that the New Jersey students who perform at or above NAEP-Basic level are meeting or exceeding grade-level expectations. According to the performance level descriptors, students performing at the Basic level demonstrate “partial mastery of prerequisite knowledge and skills that are fundamental for proficient work.”
