English Language Learners and Special Education Power Point Presentation

This presentation was made at two workshops sponsored by the Office of Specialized Populations. The presenters were B.J. Franks, supervisor of Bilingual/ESL for Roselle Public Schools and Barbara Tedesco, principal of Harrison Elementary School in Roselle. The workshops were held at Middlesex County College in Edison and the Learning Resource Center North in East Orange.

The purpose of this training was to assist educators in meeting the needs of limited English proficient (LEP) students who may have learning disabilities. Districts were encouraged to send teachers, child study team members, paraprofessionals, and administrators. Topics discussed were as follows:

  • Identification of LEP special education students;
  • Determining when a student has a learning disability versus limited English proficiency; and
  • Instructional strategies for working with special education students who have limited proficiency in English; and
  • Grouping and classroom management.
