The following is a list of resources we have compiled to assist states, districts, and schools with the implementation of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) assessments. It is not meant to be exhaustive and will continue to grow over time.

Common Core State Standards and Related Appendices:

Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC):

  • About PARCC is where you can find information on PARCC’s goals, governance structure, key stakeholders, timeline, and challenges.
  • The PARCC Assessment is where you can find learn about PARCC’s major design and development work.
  • Implementation highlights on the major issues states, districts and/or schools need to address for a successful implementation of the Common Core State Standards and PARCC assessments, mainly from a policy and system-level perspective.

Model Content Frameworks in ELA and Math and the overview webinars/PPTs by the writers of the CCSS and PARCC staff: Frameworks are available at

Fordham Foundation Review of New Jersey State Standards A report analyzing the strengths and weaknesses of New Jersey’s previous sets of ELA and Math standards and comparison to the Common Core State Standards.

Common Core Implementation Workbook Provides relevant information, case stories of good practice, key questions and hands-on exercises for leadership teams to complete together. Foci include communications strategies, aligning instructional materials to the CCSS, training educators on the CCSS and related assessments, and establishing routines to monitor performance.

Common Core Implementation Video Series The Hunt Institute and CCSSO have created videos on the CCSS by target audience and topic, many of which feature remarks by the lead writers of the CCSS. Can also be accessed through the CCSSO website or through Rhode Island DOE website, which created user-friendly matrices for accessing the ELA and Math vignettes.

A Recap of the Common Core State Standards in 2010-11: This document features state practices and models and provides a high-level snapshot of the work underway in states to implement the CCSS, including deepening educator understanding of the standards and adjusting instructional practice, engagement of the higher education community to ensure a seamless transition to postsecondary institutions, leveraging new and existing communications channels to engage stakeholders, and transitioning state assessment systems.

On the Road to Implementation: Achieving the Common Core: includes process and planning considerations around implementing the CCSS.

Instructional Materials Adoption Rubrics and Guidance

Educator Engagement Tool: You may find this tool helpful in determining how to engage educators to ensure a more seamless and effective implementation of the CCSS: It also includes case studies of best practices and specific questions around how to both build awareness of and deeply engage educators around the standards.

Strong Support, Low Awareness: Public Perception of the Common Core State Standards Demonstrates how critical it is for state and district leaders and advocates to redouble their communications efforts to increase awareness and understanding of the Common Core State Standards, common assessments and related policies—and prepare the public for what the education landscape will look like over the next few years. Math and ELA Resources

  • Illustrative Math Project: illustrates the range and types of mathematical work that students will experience in a faithful implementation of the CCSS and by publishing other tools that support implementation of the standards:

  • ELA Appendix B Text Exemplars The North Carolina Department of Education has taken the list of text exemplars included in Appendix B of the CCSS ELA and provided links to where they can be accessed on the web freely or provided ISBN numbers and the costs associated with purchasing the texts.

Alternate Assessment Development (AA-AAS system)

  • National Center and State Collaborative (NCSC) In October USED awarded $45 million to the National Center on Educational Outcomes (NCEO) at the University of Minnesota to form a partnership that will develop a new generation of alternate assessments for students with the most significant cognitive disabilities. This system of assessments will be supported by curriculum, instruction, and professional development to ensure that students with significant cognitive disabilities achieve increasingly higher academic outcomes and leave high school ready for post-secondary options.
  • Dynamic Learning Maps The Dynamic Learning Maps Alternate Assessment System Consortium (DLM) is a group of 13 states (including NJ) dedicated to the development of an alternative assessment system. DLM is led by the Center for Educational Testing and Evaluation (CETE).
