Interdistrict Public School Choice

PARENTS' GUIDE TO THE
STUDENT APPLICATION PROCESS: FIRST CYCLE*

*If you have not begun the Student Application Process before November 1 or if you began the process but did not complete it, go to Parent's Guide to the Student Application Process: Second Cycle

Listed below are the steps you will have to take to make a timely application for your child to attend a choice district in the next school year.

  1. Submit a Notice of Intent to Participate in the Interdistrict Public School Choice Program to your district of residence. The notice must be received by your district of residence by November 3.
  1. Expect to receive a notification from your district of residence letting you know whether your child may participate in the school choice program. The district of residence is required to provide this notice to you by November 25.
  1. Submit an Application for Enrollment in the Choice District to the choice district. The application must be received by the choice district by December 5.

Attach a copy of the notification from your district of residence stating that your child may participate in the school choice program. The regulations provide that if you do not receive a notification from your district of residence, your child may participate in the school choice program.

If you did not receive a notification from your district of residence, make a note on the application that no notification was received.

  1. Expect a Notice of Acceptance or Rejection from the choice district by January 6.
  1. If your child has been accepted by the choice district, submit a Notice of Intent to Enroll to the choice district. The notice must be received by the choice district by January 15.
  1. If your child has been rejected by the choice district and placed on the waiting list, you may receive a Notice of Acceptance by January 27.
  1. If you receive a Notice of Acceptance by January 27, submit a Notice of Intent to Enroll to the choice district. The notice must be received by the choice district by February 5.

NOTE: If your child has been placed on the waiting list at the choice district, you may still receive a Notice of Acceptance during the second application cycle.

IMPORTANT: Make copies of all forms for your records before submitting them.

Obtain signed and dated receipts for all forms you submit, either by

*sending the forms via certified mail, return receipt requested; or

*delivering the forms and obtaining a signed and dated receipt from the person to whom you delivered the forms.
