Vocational Education Data System (VEDS)
The VEDS system is maintained by the staff of the New Jersey Department of Education’s (NJDOE) Office of Career and Technical Education (OCTE) to collect information from the secondary districts and vocational schools with adult programs on all students enrolled in the state approved CTE programs. These materials continue to be revised on a yearly basis to more completely meet the data requirements of the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act of 2006. Failure to submit data on time could impact the allocation of funding.
General Information for Data Submission:
The required data elements for the VEDS report at secondary and adult level are listed in the data dictionaries (see below). The VEDS data can be submitted either in Access format or in Excel format. A paper printout report is not acceptable.
New Website: Starting this year, a secured website will be used for downloading and uploading the VEDS files. The districts must use the NJDOE’s data collection website at http://homeroom.state.nj.us/; find “VEDS” in the left column and click on it. It will take you to the district’s identification page to access the district’s site. The district’s ID and password will be needed from the district’s web-user administrator for the web access.
A file with last year’s data is available on the district’s secured website as an option for the districts to save the file to your local computer in order to modify and update the data file. Last year’s seniors have been removed from this file and the grade level has been updated for every remaining student. Any new students who enrolled in the state approved CTE prograns in 2008-09 school year, and were not listed in the file, should be added to the report. If any of the listed students did not enroll in the CTE programs during the 2008-09 school year, those students must be deleted from the file. All of the columns need to be updated. If you prefer to extract data from the district’s data system, you do not have to use the file on the website. If you prefer to enter all data, you may download a blank Excel worksheet from the website and save the file to your local computer for the data entry.
Placement Survey: A placement survey file must be submitted along with the VEDS report this year. It is a separate file at the secured website for district to download, which lists last year’s (school year 2007-2008)’s graudated completers. Any districts that had no graduated completers will not have this file on their secured website. Therefore, no placement data will be required. This survey is to find out if the listed students were employed, in the military services, in postsecondary advanced training or unemployed by the end of calendar year 2008 after they graduated from high school .
Special note for Data Entry:
Submit the Data
When you have completed the data entry for VEDS 2009, the file needs to be saved to your district’s data system. You must go into the DOE data collection website http://homeroom.state.nj.us/, click on “VEDS” and log in to your district’s secured website to upload the saved VEDS 2009 file and submit it.
Please submit all data by September 15, 2009. You should receive a confirmation from the website if your submission is successful.
