Selection/Nomination Process

PRINCIPAL INSTRUCTIONS - SCHOOL TEACHER OF THE YEAR:

  • Each school principal is invited to participate in the School Teacher of the Year Program.  The process for selecting School Teachers of the Year will vary from district to district.
  • The title of School Teacher of the Year can only be awarded to individuals that have not earned this title within the past five (5) years.
  • The nominee must meet ALL the eligibility criteria listed on page 5.
  • Each school is required to develop a fair and equitable selection process for determining the School Teacher of the Year.  The selection committee should consist of one or more of the following groups:
    • A committee of building teachers;
    • A faculty council or advisory group;
    • A committee of teachers, parents, and the principal;
    • The entire school staff;
    • All teachers in the building; or
    • The principal, based on input from faculty, staff, and parents.
  • All nominations must be made without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, or handicap.
  • Retiring teachers may not be nominated, as candidates must anticipate remaining active in the teaching profession for at least five (5) more years.
  • NEW DATE - School Teacher of the Year must be selected by December 13, 2013.
  • NEW - As soon as the School Teacher is selected, please email this application packet to him/her so that he/she can complete Sections I-IV of the application and forward it to district administration by January 13, 2014. 

SUPERINTENDENT INSTRUCTIONS - DISTRICT TEACHER OF THE YEAR:

  • Each superintendent is invited to participate in the District Teacher of the Year Program. 
  • NEW - In order to qualify as a District Teacher of the Year, a teacher must first be chosen as School Teacher of the Year and meet ALL eligibility criteria listed on page 5.
  • NEW DATE - Each School Teacher of the Year must complete Sections I-IV of the application and submit it to the district administrative office by January 13, 2014 to compete for District Teacher of the Year.
  • The title of District Teacher of the Year can only be awarded to individuals that have not earned this title within the past five (5) years.
  • The superintendent must convene a panel that consists of at least four (4) members who represent a cross-section of administrators, board members, teachers, parents, and local education association representatives.
  • The panel should use a fair and equitable application review process to select the District Teacher of the Year.
  • NOTE - Once the District Teacher of the Year has been selected, the superintendent must fill out the DTOY Online Form by February 14, 2014 (located on the NJDOE's Homeroom website at http://homeroom.state.nj.us/). The superintendent will need a district level user account for this project from their Homeroom Administrator (formerly WUA) in order to access the online form.
  • NEW - Once the District Teacher of the Year Online Form (DTOY) is submitted, the superintendent should print a copy of the verification screen that lists the District Teacher of the Year ID code.  Please share this copy with your District Teacher of the Year as they will need this information when moving on to the next round to compete for County Teacher of the Year.
  • NEW - In order to move on to the next round and compete for County Teacher of the Year, the District Teacher of the Year must be registered in the online District Teacher of the Year Form (DTOY) & must enter their District Teacher of the Year ID code on their County Teacher of the Year application.  The application will not be valid unless this ID code is filled in.
  • Once a District Teacher of the Year is registered online, the NJDOE will email them to invite them to apply for the honor of County Teacher of the Year.  They will need to complete Sections I-IX of the applicationMake sure that they check their inbox as well as spam folder for an email from nancy.besant@doe.state.nj.us
  • The superintendent must also complete a District Information Form found on page 10 of this packet.
  • The County Office of Education must RECEIVE the following items by 4 p.m. on March 7, 2014:
    • 1 Original District Information Form; and
    • 1 Original plus 5 copies of the County Teacher of the Year Application (Sections I-IX).

COUNTY OFFICE INSTRUCTIONS – COUNTY TEACHER OF THE YEAR:

  • A district must have a District Teacher of the Year to compete for County Teacher of the Year.
  • The title of County Teacher of the Year can only be awarded to individuals who have not earned this title within the past five (5) years.
  • NEW - Each County Office Teacher of the Year coordinator MUST be an Education Specialist that works directly with school districts.  We recommend that each Executive County Superintendent reach out to the school districts in their county to strongly encourage them to participate in the Teacher of the Year Program.
  • NEW - Each County Office MUST HAVE at least three (3) but preferably five (5) District Teacher of the Year applications entered into competition for County Teacher of the Year.
  • Each county coordinator verifies that each application submitted is complete and in compliance with application guidelines. 
  • NEW – Each County Teacher of the Year application must include a District Teacher of the Year ID code in order to be eligible for competition.  They receive this code when their superintendent registers them online.
  • The County Office of Education convenes a panel that consists of at least four (4) members who represent a cross section of administrators, teachers, parents, and county education association representatives:
      • The panel should be comprised of different individuals each year;
      • NOTE - The outgoing County Teacher of the Year should be one of the panel members; and
      • The County Office coordinator cannot be a member of the panel.
  • This Program Application Packet should be sent to the panelists ahead of time so they may familiarize themselves with the program.  Please stress to the panelists that the focus of their selection is seeking outstanding teacher leaders that are making an impact in their district and beyond.
  • The Teacher of the Year Scoring Rubric, found on pages 16-18 of this packet, should be used by the panel to determine the County Teacher of the Year.
  • The Executive County Superintendent must complete a County Information Form found on  page 11 of this packet.
  • Nancy Besant, Recognition Programs Coordinator, must RECEIVE the following by 4 p.m. on April 11, 2014 (send to NJDOE, P.O. Box 500, Trenton, NJ 08625-0500, Attn: Nancy Besant):
      • 1 Original County Information Form; and
      • 1 Original County Teacher of the Year Application (Sections I-IX).
  • Please DO NOT CONTACT your selection for County Teacher of the Year until their application has been processed and you have been contacted via email by Nancy Besant.
  • DVD application instructions will be emailed to each County Teacher of the Year once they have been verified by the NJDOE as part of the competition for State Teacher of the Year.
