The information presented in columns 1 through 3 as well as the related descriptions of the per pupil cost calculations are contained in the 2012 Taxpayers Guide to Education Spending (formerly Comparative Spending Guide) and can be found on the Department of Education's Internet address: http://www.state.nj.us/education under Finance. This publication is available in the board office and public libraries. The same calculations were performed using the 2011-12 revised appropriations and 2012-13 budgeted appropriations presented in this advertised budget. Total Comparative Per Pupil Cost is defined as current expense exclusive of tuition expenditures, transportation, residential costs, and judgments against the school district. For all years, it also includes the restricted entitlement aids. With the exception of Total Equipment Cost, each of the other per pupil cost calculations presented is a component of the total comparative per pupil cost, although all components are not shown.

Shared Services
  • The South Orange-Maplewood School District is a member-district of the
  • Morris Union Jointure Commission giving us access to shared services in
  • the areas of special education classes and transportation. We also
  • utilize the services of the Essex Regional Education Commission and the
  • Sussex Coop to coordinate transportation with other districts.
  • Starting in 2010-11, Essex Regional provides instructional aide services
  • for the district and this partnership is planned to continue in 2012-13.
  • South Orange-Maplewood is a member of the Morris County Purchasing Coop,
  • the Middlesex Regional Purchasing Coop, Ed Data, and is a member of the
  • ACES consortium for purchasing electric and natural gas. In addition the
  • School District works with the two townships of Maplewood & South Orange
  • with interlocal agreements for the purchase of fuel and for vehicle
  • maintenance and for nursing services to the local nonpublic schools. We
  • also participated in a joint bid for large turf mowing and recently South
  • Orange participated in a joint RFP for solar provision. The largest area
  • of shared services with the townships is the use of fields and recrea-
  • tional space. The three entities completed a joint effort to study
  • recreational space versus program needs. The three entities continue to
  • work together to align field and facility usage with community and
  • district needs.
