The information presented in columns 1 through 3 as well as the related descriptions of the per pupil cost calculations are contained in the 2012 Taxpayers Guide to Education Spending (formerly Comparative Spending Guide) and can be found on the Department of Education's Internet address: http://www.state.nj.us/education under Finance. This publication is available in the board office and public libraries. The same calculations were performed using the 2011-12 revised appropriations and 2012-13 budgeted appropriations presented in this advertised budget. Total Comparative Per Pupil Cost is defined as current expense exclusive of tuition expenditures, transportation, residential costs, and judgments against the school district. For all years, it also includes the restricted entitlement aids. With the exception of Total Equipment Cost, each of the other per pupil cost calculations presented is a component of the total comparative per pupil cost, although all components are not shown.

Shared Services
  • In an effort to best utilize the tax dollars provided by the residents
  • the School District of the Chathams (SDOC) Board has directed the
  • administration to endeavor to find economies wherever possible. The
  • Community has been very generous and supportive of the school district.
  • In over twenty years the distrct has never had a defeated school budget
  • and the residents have supported several referendums. In light of this
  • support the Board strives to achieve the best value for each tax dollar
  • spent. Shared services is one of the methods used to save money.
  • The district has worked to control its expenses by combining its
  • purchasing with other districts when possible. The district has joined
  • statewide organizations to control both phone and energy costs. ACTS
  • is a statewide group of school districts that purchases long distance,
  • regional and local service to obtain better rates. ACES is statewide
  • grouping that purchases electric and gas as a cooperative to achieve
  • sustantial savings fo the memebers.
  • The district also participates in numerous cooperative purchasing pools
  • such as the Morris County Co-op, Somerset County Co-op, Middlesex
  • Regional Co-op and Ed Date to name a few. The district purchases
  • supplies, materials, maintenance services and repairs through the
  • various co-ops.
  • Chatham is also one of the founding district's of the Morris Union
  • Jointure Commission (MUJC), a group of school districts that work
  • together to control costs for special education, staff development and
  • transportation. Through the auspices of the MUJC Chatham's special
  • education students attend programs offered by the MUJC.
  • Finally, through the cooperation with both the Borough and the Township,
  • the SDOC is able tp provide a complete athletic program. Both
  • municipalites offer their fields to the district and the recreation
  • programs use the district's facilites. The district also purchases fuel
  • for our vehicles from the Borough.
