Temporary Emergency Impact Aid for Displaced Students

In response to the hurricane disasters (Katrina and Rita) that occurred this year, the United States Department of Education (USDOE) has provided a grant program for school districts in an effort to offset the costs of absorbing the displaced students. The program guidelines for this program entitled “Temporary Emergency Impact Aid for Displaced Students” were published January 12, 2006 in the Federal Register. The timelines for districts and states to apply for this funding are set in statute and are very tight. The NJ Department of Education, as the State Education Agency (SEA), must obtain specific information from the districts, including the nonpublic schools within their boundaries, by January 26, 2006 in order to incorporate those numbers into the state application due to the USDOE on February 2, 2006.
