New Jersey Commission on Holocaust Education

Dear Educator:

This special program offered below is available to those qualified educators in New Jersey.  I highly recommend the program and know that you will learn much for your classrooms in instruction toward meeting the Holocaust/genocide mandate.

MASTER TEACHER INSTITUTE

The Master Teacher Institute in Holocaust Education (MTI) at Rutgers University, scheduled to begin in late August 2008, is currently accepting applications.

The MTI is a two-year advanced training program designed to develop expert teachers in Holocaust studies who will serve as resource providers in their schools, districts and communities. This program is sponsored by the Herbert and Leonard Littman Families Holocaust Resource Center which is part of the Allen and Joan Bildner Center for the Study of Jewish Life at Rutgers University.

The program will engage teachers in a wide-ranging study of the history of the Holocaust and its remembrance and will address the complex methodological issues involved in teaching about this subject. In order to enhance the commitment and support of the schools chosen for this project, a tiered-team approach will be utilized, involving top school administrators and supervisory staff.

Each session offers presentations by leading scholars in the field of Holocaust studies, supplemented by discussions with experienced educators on pedagogical approaches to this difficult subject.

More information and an application form are available on our website  http://jewishstudies.rutgers.edu/hrc/mti/  We invite you to apply to the MTI by mailing the application and requested materials to the Bildner Center by June 12, 2008.

The Littman Families Holocaust Resource Center is a registered Professional Development Provider with the NJ State Department of Education. Teachers will receive Professional Development credit for this program.  Academic credit is also available: Academic credit requires Rutgers tuition and a research paper undertaken with a Rutgers faculty member.

If you need further information about the program, or would like an application mailed to you, please contact Karen Small at the Bildner Center at csjl@rci.rutgers.edu or 732-932-2033.
