The Service-Learning Leader Schools program is a national and state initiative that recognizes middle schools and high schools from across the nation and state for high quality service-learning. The following have been recognized in 1999, 2000, 2001, and 2002 as New Jersey Service-Learning Leader Schools. The * indicates those schools who have received national recognition.

The YODA program is a Learn and Serve America Homeland Security initiative funded by the Corporation for National and Community Service. The program is a collaboration between the NJ Commission for National and Community Service and Penn Serve and is administered by the Institute for Global Education and Service Learning. The program enables students to plan for and respond to health, safety, and security concerns in their schools or communities, including natural disasters, school violence, medical emergencies, or homeland security threats. Activities include engaging students in service-learning projects to develop school crisis plans, distributing preparedness kits, conducting school safety audits and drills, providing health education, inventory and maintenance of emergency supplies, providing language assistance to non-English speaking populations, assisting communities for the disabled, and helping to develop foster care for pets.
The grant provides resources to school districts to (1) educate teachers and administrators about the benefits of connecting homeland security issues and service-learning; (2) create, develop, and offer service-learning opportunities for K-12 students that enhance academic learning, workplace readiness skills, character, and citizenship, (3) bring volunteers into schools; (4) encourage young people to pursue further education and training; and (5) hire service-learning coordinators.
