MEDIA ADVISORY
Commissioner of Education William L. Librera to Hold Press Availability Wednesday, Nov. 20 at 11:30 a.m. to Discuss Physical Education Requirements and Related Topics

TRENTON — Commissioner of Education William L. Librera will hold a press availability session today at 11:30 a.m. to discuss physical education requirements and related topics.

The meeting will be held in the third floor conference room at the Department of Education building, 100 River View Plaza.

On Tuesday, the Department of Education prepared a statement addressing physical education requirements as they relate to Core Curriculum Content Standards. It read as follows:

"On Sunday, Nov. 17, and Monday, Nov. 18, more than 90 representatives of teachers, education organizations, business, parents, and institutions of higher education met to discuss the future of standards-based reform in New Jersey and the relationship of standards to future graduation requirements.

During this time, the group developed consensus around several themes, including the need for flexibility in helping students meet current graduation requirements.

No recommendations for altering current graduation requirements were offered, and all of the discussions were purely theoretical. At no time during the discussions were recommendations offered to change or eliminate current requirements for health and/or physical education.

In fact, the group affirmed the continuing importance of helping students to be emotionally, physically, and socially fit. The Department of Education continues to support the current curriculum standards for comprehensive health and physical education."
