DOE Sponsors Bilingual Gifted and Talented Symposium
The Department of Educations Northern Region Office, in collaboration with the Office of Specialized Populations, will present Symposium IV: The Jacob K. Javits Bilingual Gifted & Talented Education Model on Wednesday, June 2, 2004 at the Passaic County Public Safety Academy in Wayne, New Jersey.
Symposium IV is part of the Northern Regions ongoing professional development series for instructors and administrators. The keynote speaker will be Patricia Rendon, Senior Education Specialist for Advanced Academics in the State of Texas, Region One. Participants will receive instruction on the use of traditional and nontraditional assessment instruments which focus on the characteristics of the bilingual/gifted students. Curriculum modules will also be presented to help educators serve identified students.
Ms. Rendon is an experienced, national presenter in bilingual giftedness. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Bilingual/Bicultural Education from the University of Texas Pan American in Brownsville, Texas and her Master of Education from the same university in Edinburg, Texas. Patricia Rendon coordinates professional development opportunities in gifted and talented topics for over 38 school districts. She is also a member of the National Association of Gifted and Talented and the Executive Board Regional Director of the Texas Association of Gifted and Talented.
Seats are still available for the symposium. The cost for the entire day of activities is $20.00, which includes continental breakfast and lunch. The symposium will take place from 8:45 AM to 2:45 PM and registration begins at 8:00 AM.
Last month, the Northern Region Office held a symposium entitled, "What is Giftedness and How Do We Develop It? An Overview of the Schoolwide Enrichment Model" with a keynote address by Dr. Joseph Renzulli.
