January 18, 2011 - Acting Commissioner's Statement on Resignation of Newark Superintendent Clifford B. Janey

Newark, N.J. - Acting Commissioner Christopher Cerf issued the following statement tonight in response to the resignation of Dr. Clifford B. Janey, State District Superintendent of the Newark Public Schools.

“We are deeply appreciative of Dr. Janey’s service to the children of Newark during his tenure and acknowledge the progress that has taken place under his leadership.”

While a search for Dr. Janey’s replacement is underway, longtime Department of Education leader Rochelle R. Hendricks will head a state transition team that will include current Newark Public School employees. The team will both oversee the day-to-day operation of the district and build the foundation for future reforms. Ms. Hendricks, who previously served as Acting Commissioner, is an expert in the field of urban education and has strong ties with community and educational leaders in Newark.
